The Power of Networking
"The Power of Networking: A Career Catalyst for Future Healthcare Providers"
Introduction:
I can't tell you how much I dislike small talk and big social gatherings. It can be mentally taxing if you aren't skilled in talking with strangers or you feel out of place. However, there are many benefits to networking and I want to share my perspective with you.
I went to pharmacy school in Ohio, which was a six hour drive from home, I didn't know anyone in my class. I had family in the area, but none of them had gone through a PharmD program before, I felt alone. The administration thought to help us make friends by putting us into a Facebook group for our class. I met two great friends in this page in the weeks leading up to moving to campus. This was my first foray into intentional networking. I know Facebook may not be where many of you are finding communities, but what is important is your ability to reach out to others and BUILD COMMUNITY. Know who you are working with and and who you are working for, and show up as your authentic self to build genuine connections.
As I progressed through school I joined affinity groups that helped shape my level of interest and build engagement in leadership opportunities and passion for independent pharmacy. I was an avid member of the National Community Pharmacists Association (NCPA) and brother of Kappa Psi Pharmaceutical Fraternity (yes, I said fraternity, it's coed). I was meeting like-minded people from all over the country and these groups gave me a sense of belonging. Now, I work in academia, so the groups I actively participate in have shifted and include the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy or AACP. I have built networks of colleagues in various areas of pharmacy practice that I am able to lean on for collaboration and sources of expertise. When you network you find allies and supporters who can build bridges for you or even help pave the way for your success. It is my hope for you that you begin building your network of people who can be a champion for you. In this post, we'll explore the impact of networking on your career and why building meaningful connections is essential for success in the healthcare industry.

This is me and my friend and colleague Victoria. We completed the same academic fellowship at Ohio State. We keep in touch and see each other at the same conferences (another great place to network) every year. She's a person I can go to because she has way more experience in critical care.
